Tapes
Tapes come in many varieties and are defined by their carrier or backing material, or in other words, the material that is coated with adhesive. Each type of carrier/backing has benefits and drawbacks depending on the intended use.
The same is true of the adhesives chemistries used to make tapes. There are acrylic adhesives, rubber adhesives, and silicone adhesives. Selecting the right tape adhesive for the substrates and environment is critical to the success of the application.

Double-Sided Tapes
Double-sided tapes are constructed of a carrier which is coated on both sides with adhesive, and a release liner on either one or both sides. Some double-sided tapes, called adhesive transfer tapes, have no carrier at all and thus can be manufactured to be as thin as 1 mil.
The type of carrier you select should match the application requirements. For example, foam tapes provide gap filling and allow for boding of irregular surfaces, while film tapes offer a thin, invisible bond line for a sleek look. Paper carriers offer cost saving and are hand tearabale, and adhesive transfer tapes further reduce cost and thickness by eliminating a layer of material.

Single-sided tapes are constructed with a backing material that is coated on one side with an adhesive. Most single-sided tapes are self-wound, meaning there is no release liner, but some are manufactured with a release liner on the adhesive side to allow converters to easily die cut without adding a secondary liner.
